    Dead 4x4, and/or dead 4L60?

My first thought, LOL OP mentioned his wife said there was "grinding with shifting"... I'm thinking it was probably more than a little grinding.

    Dead 4x4, and/or dead 4L60?

Quick check for you. Can you roll the vehicle with the transmission in park? If so, it is likely a T-case issue. It could be stuck in neutral or between gears. Have you tried to shift it again? I would put the transmission in neutral with the engine idling (parking brake on of course) and try to...

    Dead 4x4, and/or dead 4L60?

NP261LD is the floor shift for the 1500 GMT800s. The 241 was used on the GMT400s, although I am sure you could make a 241 work

    Dash Hole?

I used the little round pieces of velcro and tuck my garage door opener in there. It works best with the lift master square black ones. You can't even tell it is in there.

    GMT800 Dilemma

Thanks for all those links! That first one is definitely clean. And not many miles! I agree with the above sentiments, SUVs generally live an easy life, while the pickups are put to work. I think it is kind of strange that pickups hold their value so much better than the SUVs. Anyway, I think...

    GMT800 Dilemma

Okay, you guys really have me thinking now. @ORVietVet you are absolutely correct, there are tons of clean GMT800s around here. I am not sure he would be interested in buying a 20 year old vehicle with unknowns. I am sure he is interested in mine as a "known commodity" as I have ironed it out...

    Work out of my garage/driveway

I have heard so many horror stories about transmission shops that only do half the job. There's an old shop in my hometown that is highly regarded in the plow industry. When I had them build mine, I told them I fully intended to put a 6.0 in the truck and beat the snot out of it. The owner said...

    GMT800 Dilemma

I appreciate the input, I was thinking the same. I don't like the unknowns in this situation. Probably not, he has extremely high standards. I am not sure he has ever purchased a used vehicle. Growing up I remember him buying a new pickup every 2-3 years until he retired and kept the dodge. The...

    Work out of my garage/driveway

Preach on, that is good advice! This is what gets me. It's not the vehicles fault (most of the time). My 4l60 slipped 2-3 for years before it finally wouldn't shift towing a trailer up a hill. I limped it back to town and paid the guy cash. I knew a transmission was in my future.

    GMT800 Dilemma

Guys, I am seeking a little input from those who have been around the block a few more times than I have. My grandfather is in his 80s, and is not in the greatest health. He has a SWEET dodge that he has been telling me for the better part of 15 years that he is going to gift to me when he is...

    Work out of my garage/driveway

Good read! Interesting bit about expecting repairs along the way. But, I'm wondering, could or should an engine/transmission replacement maybe be expected too? If a 4l60/65/70e goes 200K trouble free miles, should I really be upset that it needs a rebuild? At that point, averaging 20K miles per...

    2004 RCSB 4x4 - The Mail Truck

Dumb questions, but how difficult would it be to convert a 2wd 4l60 to 4x4? I've never really thought about it, but I would think the output shaft may be different with a different tail-housing. A passenger van is a great idea! Also, who thought a 2500 with a 4.8 was a good idea? Have you ever...

    2004 RCSB 4x4 - The Mail Truck

New front brakes! One of the calipers was frozen, which turned out to be a slide pin. I intended to just rebuild the brackets and push the pistons back. One of the piston seals ruptured, so new calipers! That was probably the third brake job on those calipers, and autozone was happy to warranty...

    2004 RCSB 4x4 - The Mail Truck

Absolutely. But, if I went the route of buying an entire vehicle I would try to find one that could donate as many parts as possible. With the 93' having a cable throttle pedal, it would be easier to adapt a cable throttle body and associated wiring if I chose to keep the factory stuff. I have...

    Good brake and rotor kits

Rotors- Centric Pads- Akebono (if willing to spend more) or TRW Calipers- Purchase these locally with a lifetime warranty. If you intend to keep the vehicle, Autozone pads aren't a bad idea for the warranty. They warranty worn pads. I have done a few brake jobs where all I had to purchase was...

    2004 RCSB 4x4 - The Mail Truck

Exactly! I think it could be fun in a light weight regular cab. Good info, thanks! I sort of assumed the rotating assemblies would be exactly the same, but the 6.0 does have larger pistons. Makes sense the balance would be different. I have a machinist friend who might support this type of...

Yes, 4.8 has the 3.268 stroke with longer rods. Piston compression height is the same, and the 5.3/5.7/6.0 all shared the same crank and rods. One of these LS rebuilds is intended for my 93 k1500 Suburban with a first gen 4l60. I have it, that is why I would want to use it. On the other hand...
