I just bought a 1999 single cab long bed 4x4 5.3. Body damage but good bones. Got it cheap. Doesn’t run due to fuel filter, working on that. But Started the project and have an issue with the transmission. In park, I released the parking brake And it started to roll. Park was not engaged. Any ideas other than lower shift linkage?

Welcome to the forum from Oregon.

Likely a "parking pawl" problem.

Also, on the "not running problem", that filter would have to be completely plugged for it not to start. If it starts and runs but misses or lack power, could be fuel filter or fuel pump but in my 40+ years in the shops, I never once saw a fuel filter stop a fuel injected engine from starting. Does not mean it is not the problem, just never saw it.

I’ll looking into the Parking Pawl

I just swapped the fuel pump and it fired up, old fuel and started to lack idle but it started. Not sure, but a mechanic told the previous owner that’s what it was so I tried.
Pump looks nearly dry rot.

That's what I was insinuating. Maybe you meant to say fuel pump but you said fuel filter and then I said what I said about me doubting the no run being caused by a filter. Fuel pump, yes and the filter should ALWAYS be changed when the pump is changed. A clogged fuel filter can cause a pump to go bad, too. Whatever though, it is running. Get some good fuel in it asap. Selling a body damage truck likely means it sat for a long time.

The parking mechanism in the transmission might need fixed.

Can you feel the detent when shift? Can you remove the shift linkage and shift by hand, from underneath?
