Hello my names Tommy. I own 2 of these 6.0s in the gmt800 body style. The one in the truck is great 300k miles original drivetrain runs and drives great minus a whine that’s been there its whole life. My issue. I have this suburban that has been in my family for as long as I can remember we just recently bought it and we are planning on a 2000 mile vacation. It has a tick or a knock that goes away after 2k rpm’s. It’s done this sense as long as I can remember as well. It runs and drives better than the truck and has 100k less miles. Cold the knock or tick is gone and then warm and the rest of the day it’s there and with lower oil in the engine it’s worse. I’m curious if you’d trust the burban for this vacation. I have no doubt it would make the trip but I don’t want to get this thing stuck 1000 miles from home. Want to believe it’s lifter tick and maybe hopefully some tranny fluid and some thicker oil before the trip will clean it out but who knows figured I’d post in here to see your thoughts

Welcome to the forum from Oregon.

An exhaust leak from a broken manifold bolt typically shows cold and then can go away warm. Therefore, I want to know the actual oil pressure. Plus, use mechanic's stethoscope and pinpoint the location of the noise. How is the noise with acceleration and/or load?

That’s my other worry. I’ve read gm manuals for these vehicles that say 10 psi of oil pressure for every 1k rpms. The truck is normal idles at 40 under load about 55-60. This suburban idles at like 25 and drives under load at around 45. Which I mean is still in those requirements it’s just a little low for my liking. I’ve heard and read that oil pressure should be just fine though. And it definitely could be an exhaust leak as I don’t hear it 100% of the time I don’t feel like the rig is under power at all.

Where in Oregon? If it is for sightseeing, go to Crater Lake and go up and down the coast. If you go to the "sea lion caves", north of Florence, be prepared for the smell. If you go to Christmas Valley area, try to go to, make a reservation in advance, "Cowboy Dinner Tree". It is an experience.

Stay away from Portland and Eugene proper, unless you like homeless and nut jobs.

My dad was an owner/operator truck driver and I went with him in the truck when old enough and long enough break from school. When I went to Hawaii, when went to Vietnam, I had finally set foot in and eaten a meal in all 50 states. To this day, Oregon is the most beautiful state I have been in and lived in. Plus, no sales tax here. I moved here in 1995 from KC, Mo.

I had an intermittent lifter tick on my 06 Suburban. It would only do it on the highway after a miles of driving and most of the time go away by the time i got to my destination. It was pretty random initially and i drove it on a few trips from 4-6 hours.

Eventually it was more consistent with the tick and it bugged me enough to pull the engine and do a freshen up. One of the lifters had little sand-like particles when i removed the little cap, but otherwise no other internal damage. In fact, everything looked like it had minimal wear for an engine that had 260k and just did new bearings, piston rings, lifters/cam and gasket set.

No real way of telling how much longer an engine with a tick would run. There's simply too many variables and too many unknowns.

Welcome to the group! I've got a little lifter tick, but goes away pretty quick on start. I think I also have an exhaust leak now, which doesn't help. As to oil pressure, at idle my Tahoe can go down to 25. It's almost never above 50, even under load. I pulled my Camaro from Phoenix to Tucson and back. I've gone on three 800+ mile trips. Consistent oil pressure is more important than hitting 10psi per 1k rpm.

Knowing what the tick is, is probably the most important.

Okay. Got about a month before the trip will dive into trying to figure out where my sound is coming from. Thanks for the welcome and yes I’m not as worried about the oil pressure I’ve owned multiple different Chevys and more than a few of them have the 25 psi at idle thing go on but they all have ran great.

Right that’s kind of the details the research I’ve done has shown. I think I will take my odds throw as much money into her before I leave and hope for a smooth trip. The tick is weird some days it’s bad some days it’s really not noticeable but it’s done it forever and if it makes it the trip my plan is the same as yours want to refresh it and get it running real nice!

My brother was born on Newport Beach. My wife has never seen the ocean I lived there for about a year so I’ve seen a lot of like my wife and kid to get to experience the same! Love the Florence area and crater lake! But for sure will stay out of Portland we’re going to drive up and around through Astoria. Been a Montanan my whole life and second to Montana in my heart is Oregon!

I can make a whole day or two out of driving 101 from top to bottom and stopping at the different sights and some of the bridges are very cool.
