You can replace the valve stem seals at home with a few basic specialized tools; no real need for machine shop. Just flip them over and add water and see if compressed air from the top of the valve causes air leaks.</p><p></p><p>I have a friend that has like an 03 Tahoe with the 4.8 and has over 400k on the original. He says it burns a bit of oil, but otherwise runs good. At that mileage, remachining is probably necessary.</p></blockquote><p></p>
