If there was a broken pawl my understanding is it would affect the range shifting but not clutch engagement? My thought was that based on it shifting into low range and actually having low range gearing at the rear wheels it means the range shifting is working as intended. In the air all three (auto, 4hi, 4lo) worked so front DS was turning, it's just when on the ground only auto 4wd actually transmits power to the front. I believe in 4hi/4lo on the ground the front axle is still locking so the front driveshaft will be spun by the front wheels through the dif, but the front output on the TC is disconnected from the rest of the TC. I'm still learning how these things work internally but it looks like if a pawl or cam was broken nothing but 2wd would work, auto 4wd working seems to indicate a good portion of the internals are in working order and it's just not connecting up to the front output. When I fixed it there was no metal shaving or chunks inside so unless something broke and stayed in place I think nothing inside is too chewed up.</blockquote>
