powering a cluster at the junkyard to see milage

Going to be heading to the local junkyard soon to look for a 4L80E. I was wondering if anyone knows of a way to run the cluster off a drill battery to see mileage. I've seen it done on foreign vehicles, but never tried on GM. I would like to get a lower mileage unit, and my local yard does not mark mileage on the vehicles that are self service. They don't let you take anything bigger then a drill/impact battery so I'm hoping someone might know what wires to look for on the dash to view the mileage.

Why not bring in a small boaster pack that fits in your pocket and hook the leads up to your battery cables. They can be had for under 100 bucks canadian. I'm sure American can be found cheaper and everywhere
