For some reason I cannot picture the location of them but I know what they look like. They have a slot to slide them on. Are they continuously sliding off? at the end of the tab that they slide on to, there is supposed to be an ear on each side of the tab that holds the bumper from sliding off. Are the ears gone on yours?

If the ears are ground down, either get another tailgate or have some new tabs welded on. Or if enough of the tab sticks out past the rubber bumper when pushed on, drill a small hole in the tab and thread a screw that sticks up next to the edge of the rubber bumper and keeps it from sliding off.

Hello all,

I've got a 2005 2500HD and I keep knocking off the little rubber triangle bumpers. Has anybody came up with a better solution to stop the tailgate from rattling?

Thanks Ray
are the things they slide on bent? if they are bent they are being smeared off
i got some from AutoValue chain of stores and they havent come off except when i deliberately do it. Same truck even. So you must have poorly made bumpers or they are being aggressively pushed out. The strikers being moved can do this

I just checked my tailgate and found that the d/s bumper was missing. When closed, you can see more in and out movement on the left side compared as the right side.

Ordered a set of 2 from RA and is approx $12.50 delivered. $15.29 at AZ with my 10% military discount plus fuel to drive there. They are not in stock at AZ and if have to order in, I do not get military discount and cannot order by phone. That means $16.99 at AZ and 2 fuel trips. RA it is. Did not even know was missing 1 of them till I looked after getting on this thread.

I work out of my truck so I think I'm just knocking them off loading in and out of the bed.
There has to be a way to do what you think with the round ones.

Been kinda thinking something like this. Drilled into the bed somewhere that hits a flat spot on the tailgate. Just didn't know if someone already skinned this cat with an easier way.
I say, drill the hole in the bed in the same spot where the stock bumpers hit and attach the round ones and they will hit the steel tab that the OE design hits.

Or, same idea but use something like the bumper on the bottom of a pool stick and still drill a hole but run the screw in that holds the pool stick bumper and bolt the bumper in to place. May have to trim the pool stick bumper for a custom fit.

If I remember, I will look at mine tomorrow.

if you install where the tab touches, and then hammer the tab to be 45 degrees bent down, it will probably work
If its still too much force you can bend the tab back(I wouldnt do it that many times if i were you)if you measure carefully you can install the bumper a little outwards from where the tab would be touching, then pound the tab down, and it would be ideal. But i wouldnt do it myself since i would screw up placement and end up breaking the tab off from unbending it and wacking it

Those bumpers are to be here on the 27th. RA always seems to under promise and over deliver, as far as parts shipping time to me. I seem to be very lucky with that. I am not going to slip them on and call it good. I am going to come up with a "better mousetrap" and post that here. Those metal tabs, that the bumpers slide on to, are thick enough gauge, that I believe they can take some abuse if needed.

yes my tailgate striker wasnt in the right spot and closing it hammered them quite a bit back, i just used a channel lock to put it back then moved the striker

I looked there and didn't see them, I'll have to look again.

Much like door strikers.
I moved my driver one in before to compress weather strip
But I moved it back when I replaced that. my window run channel is the only issue on the door now, but the door sags a bit so i have to slam to get it 100% latch
I Need to do the kit for the pins

THe rear driver door is oddly loose on the pins for it too...

The passenger is moved in a bit to compress strip and i have not yet replaced it, so it needs more force just a wee bit. pins are good. THe rear doors are moved in a bit, because the steel on the lower latch on the cab are rotted away so they flex , having them in ward help keeps the doors from moving outward with flex

My driver's side tailgate bumper was missing. You could push it in and out and it would rattle but I never heard it while driving. Likely because the passenger side was still there. I just received the new Dorman ones, #45679, and easy to remove old one and install the 2 new ones. The old one was loose on the tab. The 2 new ones are tight and when I close the tailgate, there is no play in either side. Problem solved.
