Welcome,

No personal experience with it but in general, support for those units lasts a few years at best. 2016 is actually more than I'd expect considering the GMT800 line's full production ran only through 2006 with a few carryover models afterwards - 10 years is a pretty good run.

I don't even bother with the NAV in my 2006 Chrysler 300 SRT8 anymore. It's nice to have the moving map screen I guess, but I pay it no real attention. Can't remember what year the final update for that unit was - IIRC it's 2013 or 2014.

@AllStrobedUp, welcome to your first post on the forum.

I have never owned a vehicle with navigation availability. Makes sense that as they age, eventually the update capability goes away. "No nav, go buy a new vehicle".

Can anything be set up thru On Star?

It can not. These older units use a dvd for the maps. I know some people ( I saw a guy at a local show) had a current map disc that he made himself with 2020 maps. I'm not sure how he did it but I'm assuming he took Google maps or something similar and reformatted it and burned it to a disc.

I am betting he downloaded a current maps to a computer and then burnt the dvd for himself.

It would take knowing whose maps they used and what format they're in. If you're handy with stuff like that, pop the disc into a PC and see what you can see.

There was a small hacking effort on the discs for the Mopar stuff, but I think all they did was eliminate the "in motion" feature that prevented you from using certain functions while the vehicle is moving. As far as I know they didn't continue with any map updates on those past what the vendor offered. The units in those cars were made by Alpine (pretty sure) and the map data provided by Navteq, which is now called "Here" - after looking at their website, it appears they provided it for GM, too. Here's what they say when I try looking up older models:

"The map update for this navigation system is discontinued and is no longer available for purchase through this site or at dealerships.

Please note: Map updates are typically offered for approximately 5 years after the last year the system was sold on new vehicles."

With that in mind, I wonder if the maps from a newer offering of theirs can be adapted. You'd think no, because that would be too easy, but from what you said earlier it seems like somebody has done it. It can't be a one-off; that's the kind of success people tend to want to spread around.

I just kept trying year models of Silverado and it cuts off at 2018. 2019 is available. The infotainment system in those is radically different from anything a GMT800 ever saw, so I'd be really surprised if any data they would provide is compatible. It's a $150 gamble, or maybe you could get an outdated disc used, cheap off ebay, for experimentation purposes. Anything you can make work is bound to be newer data than what you have.

Looks like after the GMT900's they switched to the updates coming on an SD card.

You can't just purchase an aftermarket stereo with Apple Car Play or Android whatever? Then you are just using whatever phone you use for maps, but control functionality from the stereo touchscreen?

I think that's how that works(?). I'm looking at buying a mid-level Sony for my 99 Silverado currently. Crutchfield has all the nice model-specific plug-and-play harnesses that allow you to retain steering wheel controls, reverse camera (well, add it on these trucks, but it is integrated through the system knowing it's in R on the late GMT800), chimes, etc. so everything stays integrated.

I installed a direct fit android radio in my wife’s 2010 sierra and it retained all the controls and functions.

Revision race works has a radio that’s similar for the 1.5 din dashes

I got the nav radio for free. Trying to keep everything period correct. I will say, the sound is much much better than before. I don't mind an aftermarket radio but really like to cool factor or a 20+ year old truck with factory navigation. I don't currently have a disc but the most recent "2016" is available on eBay for 50 bucks but believe Torrents are readily available.
