We cut open the oil filter tonight at my friend's shop. The shop owner friend and myself put in a new engine and transmission in my across the street neighbor's truck. Truck has just a hair over 9k miles. This filter is the 3rd one installed and is a Motorcraft FL820S. I just last week took an oil sample and sent in to Lake Speed Jr. company Speediagnostix. We will be doing two more oil samples in a row and I will post further results and oil filter cutting open videos.

It's a Ford, yes, but is my close friend's shop and close friend neighbor.

Soon, sometime this year, we will be doing some major in frame engine work on a 2010 Toyota FJ Cruiser 4.0 engine. We had already done the same work on an American Legion friend of mine, 2010 FJ Cruiser and the work was posted at the FJ Cruiser Forum and the attention to detail and quality of work won a forum member over and he is bringing up and dropping off his FJ, from southern Ca. He will drive up, fly out, fly back in and drive back. If anyone is interested, I will post a link for the thread at the FJ Cruiser Forum of the work. Hell with it, here is the link:

nasty oil for 9k... you meant 9k on this oil right?
There are two videos. The first is 3k oil in the 2006 F150. IMO, that oil looks good. If was very dark brown or black, I would be worried. We have oil sample results due back from Lake Speed Jr. company, Speediagnostix. I will post the results here and we can pick that apart. Stay tuned.

I will also say that the oil used, since the beginning is Mobil 1 full synthetic. I have been using Mobil 1 full synthetic in my 170k miles Tahoe but on next oil change I am doing Valvoline 5w-30 full synthetic Restore and Protect.

Anyway, I change my own oil every 4k or 4 months, whichever first. My own oil looks the same when drained on the Tahoe.

Please post pics of your oil at end of 3k or whatever mileage you change yours at. I would be curious how it looks and under what conditions you drive it and what oil you use and the oil change interval. I do love comparisons for all of us at the forum.

The whole idea here is to share and help and make our trucks better for it.

Even if it is a Ford we are talking about. That is why this is posted in the Garage Forum because I work on all kinds of vehicles.

i am also using restore and protect
Im over my "oil life monitor" mileage by a less than 1k miles, but i only drive highway basically, and i finally got money to do oil change. im gonna try and get a oil test kit, and then while drainin, let it flow for a few seconds, then fill up and send out

Its my first full oil change since having the truck (I did it last fall, meaning my full interval)
my engine doesnt burn oil and i dont even have 2011 valve cover upgrade

Its been well oiled by my step dad thankfully
I am hoping to really clean nasty out with the restore and protect

Maybe you have already but if not, do yourself a favor and get on you tube and watch anything by Lake Speed Jr. and you can see his work with Valvoline and why that Restore & Protect is the way to go.

By the way, his company does the oil sample diagnostics and emails results. Company is Speediagnostix and the instructions do say exactly what you stated. Always, bring engine to operating temperature, before breaking open the drain plug, clean the area around the drain plug thoroughly, pull drain plug and wait about 3 seconds before dipping the sample bottle under the flow of oil coming out. His kits are $59.95 and includes shipping box with return shipping label.

Yes
his indepth videos made me take a chance on it, and commit to running it for 3-4 or more oil changes

I prefer to run 0w-30 in winter and 10w-30 in summer, and I cant get either of those in restore and protect (5w-30 only sadly), so im doing it for science

With my climate, I would like to use those. When im done using restore and protect, i will resume my methods

-40 degrees for a week happens here, engine block heater and 0w-30 are wise

its hot and humid , very hot, in the summer, and 10w-30 provides more protection for that

That timing chain on that toyota is a monster. I usually do my oil every 3k miles, or 6 mos whichever is first, the valvoline in the red bottle: high mileage, 5w-30.
As long as you take the upper oil pan off and you pay attention, it is not too bad. We learned on the first one and will be ok on the one coming up. Gotta pay attention to the VVT chains as well.

If I was you, I would reach out to Lake Speed Jr., at the site, and ask about the oil weights you want to use and what he suggests. I have texted with him on another matter and he is very open to helping people. So far anyway.
