Is there a way to remove the oil filter w/o spilling oil?

I ordered that Neiko oil drain pan...thanks for the recommendation @ORVietVet
I use a 5 gallon plastic jug with a wide mouth opening with a screw on cap, to hold my waste oil before I dump at a local shop. When I dump my oil from this same drain pan, it goes smoothly and when I can I let the snout stand up in the drain and the large mouth of the jug cradles the round on each side of snout and it is all up next to house siding and the top of pan leans against siding and the pan stands there. When I get back to it, 99% of oil/fluid is gone and not just oily fluid sloshing in the bottom of pan.

Nice!

Also, did you mention at some point you used a rubber mat for working under vehicles?

I'm trying to remove the starter on that Chrysler minivan and I parked it in my backyard under my oak tree, which unfortunately is just dirt...and now it rained! SMH

My girl gets them at Bi Mart, in our PNW area. They are a Performance Tool product #W88981 and is a 4' x 8' roll out mat that is about 3/8 thick and has a diamond plate texture on one side. I can spill fluids on them and wipes right up and I have set jack stands and floor jacks on them. I have even stacked them and is even more comfortable.
