Quick autopsy on the old 4.3...

Some dark looking rods..

.... throw some new bearings in, she'll be fine ;-)

was interesting to see that GM used the "broken rod caps" on these motors

I tore down the 4.3 on my 99 Silverado. I don't remember if it had fractured connecting rods caps or not. I think I had some photos somewhere.

You are rebuilding that engine, are you?

I'll bet a dollar that if you broke that engine free, reassembled it with lube, topped it off with oil and ran it hard it would still run for awhile even with the smoked bearings.
yep... little emory cloth and quick shoe lace polish on the journals, add some new bearings, it would for sure.. top end is fine, cross hatch still in the cylinders..

Confirmed. No fractured connecting rods caps on my 99 4.3. Some photos. All my bearings were shot. Looks like on the cam bearing, the upper portion of the bearing wasn't even touching the camshaft journal...

Engine had about 5 psi at hot idle...and everyone kept telling me, "change the oil pump, that's your problem!" I knew better. Actually, the ONLY thing that I could have used WAS the oil pump, LOL. I didn't check the cam bearing clearances because my dial bore guage didn't go that small, but the rod bearings were close to 5 thousands on the clearances.
