Concerning GM 6.2 recall and oil viscosity

ive always ran thicker than recommend. knock on wood I’ve never had an oil related failure. But I’m also the same guy that runs 15-40 in everything from my lawnmower to my 547ci alcohol big block.

I put kendall 20-50 in race engines, looser tolerances plus the greater crush. The 5-30, seems fine in this one, though I have used just straight 30 in work truck engines in the past. The vid says that they are using the 0-20 for economy reasons, and going to 0-40 for the crush. As far as I heard with people pulling the engines apart, oil starvation is the issue. I guess the 20 weight could be picking up aeration issues at the pump.

In my opinion the main take-away from the video is:

An internet motor oil myth just got busted. And what is that myth you're asking? It's that you can't use a viscosity higher than what the OEM recommended.

Which he even mentions doesn't mean heavier is always better or even required. It's always based on application needs verified by data. I run thicker in a lot of engines based on oil temperature and/or pressure.

-50 is something I'm running in the LT1 due to recommendations from GM for track usage, my own UOA, and the temperatures I see.
