I have GT4 3.73 axles on my truck, a junkyard near me has a 2006 Silverado 2500 that rolled, with 4.10's GT5 at 154k on the truck, they are asking $1,000 for both, say they are in great shape. It is about 1/4 the price of quality rebuilt units. Worth it? I would have to do some recalibration, and not sure if they even fit.

Yes, it will bolt right in. Are they the 9.5" or 10.5"? Just get your tune reflashed for the new axle ratio.

I actually have a 10.5" 4.10 G80 axle I bought really cheap ($175 IIRC) from a 2500HD. Was going to swap into my K3500, but that truck is getting sold. Another candidate is my 04 Suburban 2500, but I may have to sell the axle because we may be moving soon...SMH

Try to get the G80 variety on the rear.

What kind of "great shape" warranty comes with the axles? $1000 each is too much. You have no idea of the previous maintenance on the fluids, correct?

Plus, you want a 4.10 gear for what? Gonna haul/tow with it all the time? I had 4.10 gears in the recently sold 2004 K2500HD. I wished that the gear was a 3.73. I did not tow or haul and the mpg suffered. If your truck is a daily driver, I vote for the 3.73. You know what you have but you don't know the 4.10 gears history.

True. 1k for both together, usually people want $750 for just the rear. The yard has a handshake warranty, though generally a month or two, this is just a redneck operation, buy up stuff that wrecks near by and throw it in a pole barn. I mean like we say in the midwest, close enough to bring it back and throw it through their window if it's no good. I spun them, felt ok, didn't pop them open no. I kind of like the idea of trying them out, though like you say, the 3.73's are pretty good too, though I have a bit of tire with these 285/75 16's. The upside is if I don't like them, I can swap out to the old ones. I do tow about 10k every once in a while, it is one of the reasons I got this rig. I sold the one rust bucket, got sick of dealing with it, someone has a little s-10 I have been looking at, I know they rebuilt the engine and transmission, a 4 cylinder will offset the worse mileage out of the 2500. Who knows though?

Nice. These are still with the brakes and everything too. Looks like a tie on the opinion about 4.10's. I had them on my older truck and liked them.
I always try to get 4.10's, with the exception of one I ordered with 4.88's (2001 F550). But we have some steep grades and tow campers and stuff. Also, we cant go fast on Alaskan roads if we want to stay alive, so 70 is max but mostly 60 on the paved highways (we have unpaved highways).

AK is nice, had a friend who lived in Ketchikan, went up to Denali. Here is highway hell, never ever drive the I70 if you can avoid it, worst freeway I have ever driven. Chicago traffic? Forget about it, nightmarish. Even the town I live in has grown into a city, and I drive through some of the western counties here, think of maybe moving there, they have had negative population growth. Maybe after I retire. This truck is not supposed to do over 85 with the aluminum driveshaft, I pushed it up there to see how it handled, I have driven it across country, I usually stay around 70 though.

I have a co-worker who just moved to Indiana, he sends me pictures and it looks beautiful there. I forgot what town, but surrounded by hardwoods.

People from out west always mention how green it is here, it is part of the Mississippi ecosystem. A lot of little parts are real nice, though a lot of farms, and factories. Nature here isn't majestic like it is out west.

I'd have to do some recalibration ... they fit.
My Tahoe Z71 has 3.73 axles. To make a long story short, I'd be SO MUCH HAPPIER if it had 4.10s.

Don't forget:
You'd spend more time in 4th (w/ TCC LOCKED) & 3rd (w/ TCC LOCKED), less time in 2nd.
Your city / metro / urban MpG would definitely improve, question is by how much.
Even if your highway MpG does not improve - and it very well might depending on how you drive with 4.10 -
you're delaying your transmission's next rebuild, whether or not you're interested in the durability and/or the tow rating improvement.

Point is some of the benefits of more gear are not immediately obvious.

If you don't like it you can always go back to 3.73 & give the 4.10s to someone else who'll appreciate them

What you say mirrors my thoughts as well, I am thinking of going and snagging them. Because they are in good shape, I can sell them for what I bought them for. It is another project though.

Go snag 'em. Worst case you put 'em in, don't like 'em, swap 'em out for your old axles,
and just when you tire of storing them, someone makes you an offer you can't refuse.

Best case 'a': you appreciate them more than expected, start preaching to the unconverted, wondering why so many people just don't get it,
your transmission lasts longer before its next rebuild as you barely if at all notice any MpG penalty, because you still drive like a wise man ...

Best case ' b': you enjoy them more than expected, preach to the unconverted, chalk it up to 'some people are afraid of a lil more fun in a truck / suv',
and start wondering about modding your rear axle's lil locker springies ...

I wouldn't mind an upgrade for the G80, that's something for another day though.
FYI the 'upgrade' I'm writing of is not a major investment.
From the little I managed to glean off of youtube videos about it:
there is one spring responsible for detecting the relative RpM difference between the two wheels;
by either winding or unwinding the 1st spring once you change the amount of slip difference before it locks up ...
there is another spring responsible for deciding at what road speed it must unlock;
by either winding or unwinding the 2nd spring once you raise the 'must-unlock' speed

Problem is the videos I've seen spend too much time showing off the cool part,
but not enough time making clear how the little coil springies work, and whether to wind or unwind them.
May be one of the instances where a write-up is more useful than a video (at least for me).

The 4.10 is great, I have it in my 2005

To be honest, i think g80 comes standard in a lot of the ways the truck would be equipped factory, but its not to say it wouldnt be possible ot have an open differential

4.10 for my 6.0 and 4l80e gives me great service

The drum brake is really dumb because of rust. but you MUST use semi metallic brakes if you live where it rusts. trust me. also, service the seal and or bearings if needed before putting in truck
Makes it easier
The rear axle fluid overall should be changed and put fresh stuff in , a new cover if rusty and an elastomeric gasket from lube locker would be great

Note: if you are putting a disc 14 bolt under your 99 (drum originally) you need to make sure your brake master cylinder and hydroboost and front brake size are all matched so they perform the way they were intended to

The ABS system probably wont have DRP but not sure
