I believe that is where some of the vehicle jack equipment is stored and even a space for road flares. BUT, I could be wrong.

Also, gloves, spare tools....etc.

Jack is stored on the wheel well - under the cubby just forward of this storage area. Might be for gloves and flares. It’s a strange shape/set up - makes me think it might be for something specific.

Yes, above is correct, storage for jack, gloves and tools. I changed to a bottle jack, some small pieces of lumber (blocks) to lift higher. You can also fit the removable hitch, some rain gear and better gloves.
