Umm. I had read some posts from Chello's Dad on the LS1TECH forum (regarding the 4 vs 5 planetary gearsets and some conceptual problems with GMs 6LXX transmissions). I think this gentleman on the interview is Chello's son.

Interesting interview:

Maybe tomorrow I can summarize into some Cliff Notes or maybe something?

Summary:

1. The Chellos worked on the 4Lxx-series transmissions (specifically the 4L80e) as powertrain engineers, both him and his Dad. GM have engineers do annual updates to the their assigned units, which can vary from actual fixes to common issues, but mostly measures to reduce production costs. He left sometime in the mid or late 2000s, but still does some consulting work for manufacturers and mostly does work for the performance market.

2. Chello mentioned the common myth that the 5 planetary gearset of the 4L65e is superior to the original 4 planetary gearset of the 4L60e. What actually happened was GM changed the metallurgy of the newer gearset (was cost-cutting, of course) and marketed the later and a superior design.

3. Bean counter executives have meetings with the engineers and basically demand designs (new design or solutions to existing issues) be the cheapest solution.

4. Mentioned how GM took the 6Lxx from ZF and basically value engineered it (changed internal things to tin cans), including the valve body and the pump, which turned out to be the problem areas. Ford OTOH, basically left the units unchanged and they had less issues. ZF engineers were like, "why are you guys trying to change or modify things?" when they had meeting with GM engineers in the late 90s/early 2000s.

5. Mentioned how the electronics have been getting so complicated. And most all other manufacturers have adopted these complex systems and they too are having issues.

6. When asked what truck would Chello buy, he basically said a GM from the early 2000s! 1751030049833.png

7. Chello says the last great year of the GM trucks was the 2006. Basically, the GMT800! 1751030060647.png

I'll continue watching later, and maybe add stuff that I missed. I may try AI to summary TBH, LOL.

I watched this vid too and also thought it was awesome to finally have all our thoughts validated!!! Of course being a owner of 3 gmt 800s I loved hearing that as well! Now I'm gonna really piss off my wife and buy a few more.
Welcome to the forum @j_dizzle68, from Oregon.

My girl drives a 2002 TrailBlazer GMT360 and I drive a 2005 Tahoe Z71 GMT800 and we both own a 2004 K2500HD Silverado GMT800.

More pics of your 3 GMT800's, please.

I actually think that our trucks are going to be highly coveted in a few more years, like the GMT 400's are now. I think you will see the value of them go up and a nice clean one go way up because there will be less and less available and people are going to start collecting them. I know in WI mine is considered an antique this year so I am switching it it antique plates.

Yeah, I agree with you 100%. I think the GMT800 have started to reach the "nostalgic" status, LOL. Buy them while you can!

My youngest brother did an LS swap into his 90 C1500 RCSB a few years ago. He spent a TON of money and time and I helped him out rebuilding a 4L80e for him. Recently he was looking for another truck and was looking at yet another ragged out OBS. I took a look and told him he was basically buying another endless money pit (being honest), and suggested he look into a nice NBS. So he bought a 00 Sierra RCSB and has been telling me how much nicer the Sierra is and enjoys driving it. I think he's going to be selling the OBS at some point (I'm sure at a loss.)

I was all hyped into the LS swapped OBS a few years ago when I bought my OBS, but have changed my perspective now that I have owned it for a while: Why buy an older truck and screw around swapping engines, electrical harnesses, trying to make gauges/AC work, headaches, stress, etc, when you can just buy a truck that already had an LS from the factory!? I'm older now too, so more wiser I guess? LOL

Our 2004 K2500HD, with 118k miles on it, is driven only when a truck is needed. The body and interior and engine compartment are great, especially for a 21 year old truck. Has new tires and no rust and everything works. If we ever decide that we do not need anymore, I know I can easily get our money back and then some.

The thing I noticed about our GMT800's is that I don't get to work on that many of them. They don't break that often. You do the maintenance and they will perform day after day.

your truck is in nice shape and low miles. you need to get under the frame about where the rear tires start ,on the frame rails
The tubular crossmember holds rust/water and rots out on a vertical plate

i TINK this is the same one, see the hole there? that should be the crossmember i mention. on my truck the plate is rusted on the inside side, right there (driver side)

Before purchasing the truck in December, I had looked under it from front to back with a very bright light, last July. The truck has lived it's life in the state of Oregon and I found no rust at all. I am the 3rd owner. But thanks for the heads up.

Another thing that amazes me is that I have offers to buy my Tahoe and truck all the time. So many people know how quality went down with 2007 forward and that the GMT800's are the s*h*i*t!!!!

I work on mine and friends GMT800's but that is 95% maintenance.

I believe you.

A few years ago I had a guy approach me at the grocery store and asked if would sell him my Silverado. He said he'd just gotten out of a new truck payments mess and had cash and noticed how clean my truck was. I was kinda surprised because the only thing I did was wash the old Silverado and put armor-all on the wheels.

My buddy has a 01 RCSB and he always gets compliments for his. He's the type of guy that washes and waxes his truck every week. It almost looks like it just rolled out of the assembly line. Has over 400k!

I like to keep my trucks clean and take care of them because they take care of me.
