I just got myself a cheap scanner to try and figure out my random misfire code but came up with the usual problem of not having the knowledge to go along with it. What should some of these numbers be when they are ok?
The only thing i know for sure is the ignition advance wanders by 30 degrees and that cant be right. But all the other numbers? No idea.
Is there a list or dummys guide to acceptable ranges anywhere?

You really need a scanner that has advanced features like misfire counts. Does your scanner have that? What scanner did you get?

The spark advance varies by many factors. I haven't paid much attention to what they are, but I want to say I've seen 25 degrees regularly.

I dont know where you find a list, I just started learning one item at a time. Start posting them here and lets all talk it through. By the way, here is a spark advance table, 30 is very common.Screenshot 2025-08-06 095105.png

Not sure how cheap a scanner will work, but I'm pretty sure my cheapo scanner will do it. I also have a mid-range home-gamer one that does it, too.

Its an autel al 549. It doesn't seem to do misfire counts. As with everything these days there's no instruction book other than a pdf online.
The live data told me my tps was at 13% at idle so i blasted it with intake cleaner, it was very dirty, and got it to fluctuate between 3 and 5%. But it didnt fix anything.
I took it for a 200yd drive and it will stall coasting back into the drive way and i got my MAF code back P0101. The cab grounds i took off and cleaned up.
I can see the ground on the back of the engine is still connected.

Oh and i also get abs code C0268 motor stalled, just in case they share something.
This truck was an estate sale purchase and has sat for some time (inside) judging from the rust on the rotors.

Umm. No misfire counts? Does it list fuel trims on the live data? Something that gives you a clue at least which bank is misfiring? Bank 1 vs Bank 2? Running rich maybe since you have unburnt fuel vapors on the cylinder with the misfire?

I would also check basics such as fuel pressure. Do you have a fuel pressure guage? That's a must for working on these trucks. The HF nicer version is like $42 and has the longer hose so you can stick the guage on your windshield while you crank. Does the fuel pressure hold when priming the pump?

Sounds like the truck was bought like this? Yes? Or did it ever run well? The more information we get, the better advice we can give you...

I have some kind comparison data for those of you who know about such things.
The left hand data is a 2003, essentially the same truck.
The added right hand data is the 2004 that runs rough.
Dads truck was warm at the time and mine was cold.

I will look into that. How bad a job is that for a weekend driveway project? Harder or easier than a GMT 400?
What intake manifold gaskets? It's incredibly easy. About a 10-15 minute job. Maybe 30 minutes if you take your time and also clean the valley cover if it's really gunked up.

The LS engines use a dry intake manifold design, so you don't dump coolant everywhere. Nor do you open up the top of the engine by removing the intake (the valley cover seals the top of the engine.)

Remove the fuel lines (using that little split ring tool.)
Remove EVAP and pcv hoses
Remove the injector connectors
Remove the MAP sensor connector
Remove the 8 mm bolts
I think that's it.

Oh really, that sounds ok. I havent picked up a Haynes manual yet.
When i did my 94 K1500 i was exhausted by the time i had got everything out of the way so i could unbolt the manifold!
Youtube videos have made it look easy too, but i have learned my lesson from trusting them exclusively. Nothing ever breaks or wont come undone for those guys

Just in case anyone was wondering, Replaced spark plugs, no change, then took it too the shop ended up being 2 bad injectors and they did the usual mass air flow, plug wires, there was a small intake manifold leak, but now shes running like a champ, and parked in the barn until snow and salt season is over
Oh, and the o2 sensors were not reading the same so 1 or more was replaced
