2001 Ford Explorer PCM Test?

I am trying to help a friend with their Explorer that runs bad, and when I plugging in my computer with HP tuner and tried to connect VCM scanner, it would only connect for about 5 seconds if it would connect at all. Then I got out a cheap scanner and it pulled up a PCM code that will not clear. What is a good way of testing the PCM to see if it is the failure?

I would first locate the PCM, check all wiring to it to make sure is in tact and unplug and look for corrosion and filth and pins problem.

Also, locate ground for system and inspect/clean.
