Got a question for you. 2004 Silverado 1/2 ton 2WD. G80 limited slip is shot. I get a one wheel peel, right side spins. If I go back with a limited slip, what are my options? I'm not against another G80 but I have proof they don't last. I'm looking for cheaper options versus a full locker.

I blew up my daughters Gov Bomb doing burnouts in the road, that was in a 87 full floater in a 74 SBLB. Those are carrier specific so I had to pull the Gov Bomb out of my parts truck. Are the smaller axles carrier specific also?

Detroit Truetrac is what I hear gets best reviews.

I've had good experience with all my G80s though. Has it worked at some point? I think it uses the gear oil w/o the friction modifier?

Have you removed the cover for inspection?

I hadn’t removed the cover yet. I’m not hearing any grinding out of it; not that I would hear anything with me being half deaf and a cherry bomb under the truck. It did work at one time. Truck has 191k on it. I think it’s gone on siesta recently. I’ve been doing a fair amount of research and am really considering just rebuilding it. Rebuild kits are $250. Used axles go for $300-500 but you never know what condition you’re going to get. Limited slips are going around $500 and up; these are out of my price range.

Yea, you gotta remove the cover anyway. Maybe have the kit there and be able to return if you pop the cover and see a rebuild will not be a complete fix.

Is it the clutches that wear out on the G80? I remember there was company that sold rebuild kits for them?

I can't remember what those clutches do or how the thing works at the moment.

And not that it matters, but I thought these G80s on the trucks are actually locker-type of differentials, even though everyone calls them "posi." Possibly because of the "clutches"?

I think when the G80 lock, both wheels turn at the same rate, 1:1. On the posi or LSD, there's a certain slippage between each side, hence their name.

Didn't help that GM also used the RPO code G80 on the Camaros, which actually did have a LSD. SMH
