So I was watching on YouTube, some guy removed the factory steering wheel and airbag and replaced it with an aftermarket steering wheel. It looked pretty cool but out of curiosity has anybody here done this? I don't know about the legality of doing this. What are your opinions?

You are asking for opinions, well here it is. Leave that steering wheel alone. You just did the dash cluster and it is now great, looking at it thru that steering wheel that houses a safety device and likely steering wheel controls. I like the buttons on my wheel. That supplied pic has a big gapping hole where the column used to be. What was the reason given for the "guy" at you tube to do what he did? But, above all else, it is "your" truck and you need to do what you want with "your" truck.

Plus, I think the ignition switch is contained in the missing column, where did it go?

Next time that guy posts a video or pics of his truck interior, he ought to clean it up. That thing looks like a pig sty.

Does Wa. State do safety inspections?

Ok so the photo is from the internet. It is the same steering wheel that I saw on YouTube. I just thought just the steering wheel looked cool. What the person did to his steering column I have no idea. I guess I should have picked a better photo haha.

Washington state stopped doing safety inspections in 2020.
You are right about leaving it alone. I thought about it later and I shouldn't mess with the airbag anyway. It is there for safety. Also, my steering wheel does not have any buttons on it. Here is my steering wheel.

Thanks

Ok, both of my GMT800 trucks have steering wheel controls. It is for ease of use and convenience but is also something else to deal with if have any problems. In your case, if you changed the steering wheel and disconnected the air bag, then a warning light would come on unless you rigged the correct resistor at the harness connector.

That looks like a race-only setup with a bare-bones replacement steering shaft and everything. I get it if the guy is going for functional but it looks more like a BS mix of "durr it's a race truk cuhhh" since it still has an otherwise full dashboard.

Depending on what year your truck is you can use billet specialties Part Number: 135-31126 and buy a 9 bolt steering wheel from either them or forever sharp. There is also adapters you can use to adapt other bolt pattern steering wheels. I did the same on my 95, but the same concept works up to 03.

Hmmm thats a gamble, I don’t know what changed after 03 that wouldn’t allow that adapter to work. If an 03 and up steering wheel is backwards compatible to the earlier trucks than I would assume that the adapter would work for you. But that’s all a guess.
