I know this has been discussed a lot on other forums but lately I’ve seen amsoil listing their dexron II/III compatible atf (multi vehicle atf) as a valid fluid for auto trak transfer cases that call for auto-trak II fluid specifically.

Any insight as to weather the auto trak fluid is basically dexron III with additional friction modifiers? That’s my guess since that’s what the amsoil atf is. It’s just a higher concentration of friction modifiers than their dexron VI fluid “fuel efficient”. What do you use?

IMO, I use what the owner's manual calls for. You can be perfectly fine with what "will work" but as long as the Auto-Trak II fluid is available, that is what I will use.

I use the GM Auto-Trak II when working on friends trucks, but sometimes I cant find it in Alaska and need to use a compatible. Next time I am in the garage I will see whats on the shelf, because the last time I had to walk around the parts stores reading the small print to find one.

My 04 project suburban with the auto track T case had red ATF when I drained it a few weeks ago. I collected the fluid and drained the pan and didn't see anything like excessive friction material or chunks or anything. Who knows how long that had been there?

So I refilled it with proper blue fluid...

IIRC, the service interval for that fluid is anywhere between 30k to 50k miles. BUT, IMO, you cannot change the fluid TOO often. Sometimes, I just feel like changing fluids under my truck(s) and see what drains out. When you get old and the weather is nice and my girl wants to sit around and talk/help, it don't get any better.

Fyi just drained the auto trak tcase in the 2000 z71. It probabaly had at least 200k miles. And it was super clean and nice and blue. I was surprised. Needless to say i put the auto trak II blue juice in it.
Are you saying there was 200k miles on that fluid? You know that for sure?

Yeah pretty sure. Last time I changed it it was around 60k miles. Dad drove the truck last 20 years and I’m 99% sure he never changed that fluid. He was a “don’t change it til it’s broke” kinda guy. Currently it’s got 292k miles. So pretty confident it had over 200k miles.

Wow, that says something about how good that fluid is and why it should be used instead of a substitute.

Yea, here in Eugene, Or., it rains a lot and 4x4 is not needed unless go to mountains and I just don't go there that often. When I did a rear main seal on my 2005 Tahoe, I did all fluids under there about 20k miles ago.
