was about to change the rear shocks on my 2500 avalanche when I noticed a hole in the crossmember that the mount is mounted to.

This crossmember also supports the rear of the fuel tank.

I have checked Safe-T-Cap and Rustbuster for a replacement cross member.

They do not have one specifically listed for the avalanche 2500 (or the suburban 2500).

Both companies list a crossmember for the 2500 silverado.

I called Safe T Cap, and they were no help at all. I mean none. They told me to send a picture of my cross-over to them. The problem is that you can't do that unless you pull the fuel tank down.

I called Rustbuster and they did not know...but sent me dimensions for the kit they sell for the 2500 silverado. From the pictures it looks like a possability.

The part number they gave me is RB7811

1) Do any of you guys know if the 2500 silverado frame uses the same rear fuel tank support crossmember that is used for the avalanche 2500/suburban 2500?

2) Is there a company out there making rear fuel tank support crossmember replacements for the avalance 2500/suburban 2500 if a specific application is required?

3) Has anyone had their rear tank support crossmember replaced?

Thank you,

Harry Hild

Other than rust busters (who are good) there are people selling repair stuff on ebay. Around here there are some shops that do rust repair, most don't because collision repair is better money.

I have been speaking to someone in Mass... I can't believe this is something hard to figure out. Does the fuel tank rear support crossover interchange between a 2500 suburban/2500 avalanche... and a silverado... I just checked the width... (in the rain).. and they are close

It is dropping the tank, not that difficult, you are right, though usually it is to look at the ears holding the control arms in the front, those are a lot more difficult to repair. It is probably the same crossmember on all the vehicles.

Can you find a GMT800 2500 Silverado in a salvage yard and compare?

Welcome to the forum from Oregon.

Since you are in a salt on the roads state, you would think there is a source somewhere. Have you looked at GM Parts Direct or any other GM parts source?

Care to share the year of the Avalanche? I am assuming is 4x4? I hate assuming.

I am in NY, we do salt our roads, but I drive it on the beach... it is supposed to be worked. :)

Its a 2003 4x4 2500.

Mine is not bad all I can see is a hole in the cross over.

I was in a jeep shop, and they were giving me trouble for wanting to have this repair done. But, guess what... in that same shop was a jeep with a frame so bad you could see gaping holes in the frame rail right before it turns up over the rear axle. I guess a rusty jeep gets special consideration...

I looked and didn't see the brackets on rock auto, for the avalanche, they do for the silverado:

Reason they just sell the bracket is because the crossmember itself is just a piece of steel pipe.

Taking it to a bodyshop, and why that is not a reasonable thing to do where I live...

Long island is not a great place to have an older vehicle. Most autobody shops want to work on newer vehicles and want to work with insurance. Rust repair is something they try avoid, and frame repair is even more difficult to find someone to do. That is just the state of the autobody buisness in the area where I live.

What I am doing is bringing the truck to a fabricator/welder that works on frames and auto restorations. But, I told him that a kit existed for the cross-over that I want replaced. He gave me a price. I later found out that the kit that I thought would work (which what I was originally told--months ago by the company selling it- safe t cap) was designed for a silverado, and they don't know if it will work. What is worse, is when I call... I get a receptionist... who is not technical support, and she puts me on hold to answer any question I ask...SO SAFE T CAP.. they are out. If I get this to work with the kit from Rustbusters.. who have sent me dimensions etc.. I will be writing those guys a glowing review.. and safe t cap... will be getting a review that a company dreds. I AM SORRY BUT SAFE T CAP.. they deserve it.

I really don't want to put the welder that agreed to do this job in a position where the truck is up on a lift with the gas tank out.. and he is trying to find the right parts that will have to be shipped. That will put him in a bad spot and tie up a lift. I don't want that to happen. I really don't want that to happen. I want this to go smooth. I have other work for this guy to do, and I don't need trouble.

I looked at the parts listed in this post in response to my original... its the same issue. Will the silverado 2500 parts fit the avalanche. No one is really answering that question.
