i have a 01 , 8.1 w/4l80e 4x4. 1/4milion + miles. 2nd gear quit yesterday. No cel, used scan tool on live data and watched shift indication. Thats ok. checked 1-2 and 3-4 shift solenoids for activation. they appear to be working electrically b/c I can hear the solenoids working. Any other clues to what this might be.

If you lose the sprag, you lose second gear. You can check the pan, but if it failed in a manner it didn't drop anything, you may not see stuff. I can't think of anything else that makes only second, but I'm a complete noob when it comes to transmission internals.

Here's the chart for what clutches are active in what range and gear. https://www.theturboforums.com/attachments/4l80e-clutch-application-chart-pdf.659522/

Here's a quick search of what could be the problem:

In general, a quick diagnostic trick is to remove the big round case electrical connector. That throws the transmission in limp mode and you will only have second gear and reverse. In your situation, if you still don't have second gear, then it would point to an internal failure, and pretty much rule out electronics.

I removed the pcm connector to transmission and drove it. Trans stays in 1st. Reverse works also. Any ideas?
