but if you got from 2hi to 4hi, it takes a few seconds, what makes it faster then just normally switching

4hi is different than when auto engages 4, I'm not sure how exactly but auto doesn't lock all 4 wheels to spinning at the same speed, it acts like awd
Auto is for everyday driving while 4hi is more for when your stuck or trying to take a run at a hole you know you won't make it through in 2...

ahhhhh that makes sense, the first time i saw 4auto was a OBS escalade
