When talking dealerships, my dad always told me “that man isn’t there to sell you that car, he’s there to sell you the one to replace the car you just bought”. And he’s absolutely right, we bought my wife’s 2016 grand Cherokee about 2.5yrs ago in OKC and about a year later it started misfiring to the point it was undriveable. My scanner showed no codes or active misfires even though the CEL was flashing and the car had no power. I ended up taking it to the local Chrysler dealer for diag and they said it needed a new engine, salesman automatically assumed I’d trade it in. After fighting them on it I got our car home and began a more thorough investigation and found a bad VVT? solenoid. $150 later the car has been flawless.

Yea, you can bet that the dealer techs are told at times, what their "diagnosis will be", by a salesman. I would have thought that by now, a dealership tech would have come out with a "tell all" book.

Hi, I don't know if it's been mentioned before, but you might look away from the busier cities to get a better price. The truck you did a PPI on was near Sacramento, and the later one outside of the Bay Area, both locations where prices are higher. I'd look in rural areas where prices should be lower

Yes, the rural ones are usually the better deal, it is how I got mine, saw the ads for it in marketplace, craigslist, followed it for a few months. I see a decent one out in the middle of nowhere Idaho.

I would want to get as much info as can about the front damage. Also try to find out what commercial business it was involved in. Looks pretty good otherwise.

That is my neck of the woods. Does look clean, I have to doubt it is from around here, though looking at the spare, maybe.
It was in Idaho it's whole life until the end of 2024. I'm going to call the dealer later today and ask about it. There aren't many places that do pre purchase inspections in that area. Funny thing is, I'm originally from Rensselaer New York ....never heard another Rensselaer

Good luck. Be prepared. The "dealer" will claim ignorance of all history, except for what the CarFax says. That spare tire is pretty rusted. I do not see any diffs, transfer case, transmission, brake fluid or p/s fluid changes at all. I also see the cooling system checked in November of last year and the temp gauge reads higher than any of mine do. All of mine read just below 210 and this one reads just over 210. Wonder what condition the inside of radiator is and I see no thermostat changes. ever. Best to arrange some sort of deep inspection on a 21 year old truck. That price is definitely a "dealer" price, They are selling mileage and looks.

I checked 2 sources for VIN decoding. Both say this is a 3.73 gears.

Some parts of Idaho are dry, desertish, others, get snow and they salt the roads. Northern Indiana was settled mostly from New England, the Southern part of the state from the South; I would not surprised if this Rensselaer is related to New York's. The dealer looks like a flipper, not surprised, just be wise to the laws here, once you buy it, it is yours. Likely pre-inspections can be done in the surrounding area, up north is like Chicagoland, East to South Bend or Fort Wayne, and more south to Lafayette (where I live) on to Indianapolis, this is all "close" to us, less than a couple hours drive away.

Water pump was replaced when dealer got it. It's at Tim's Auto just outside of Rensselaer Indiana, he seems like a good 'ol country boy. I think next would be a ppi done in town. He sent me pictures underneath, lmk what you fellas think

Looks decent enough, not too rusty, a ppi is a good idea. It has a healthy price, so it shouldn't need anything. About that too, you should ask if it's negotiable. I suppose we do sound country here outside of the city.

I see some surface rust and some signs of the non protected rust spot that get exposed to the salt.

It's a dealer. That price is negotiable and if you do buy it, negotiate the inspection in to the final price.

Ok, I'll bite, why? Is it badly rusted? The inspection report does not say. The rattle in the steering column is likely the lower column bearing. Those are inexpensive and kind of a PITA to replace, but are doable. You have to disconnect the upper steering shaft and you should check that u-joint for play and replace the shaft as needed. Wheel bearing assembly is easy enough to replace and so is the 3rd brake light. 97K miles.

What was the asking price?

Steering column I'll bring to my friends house and do it on a weekend no biggie. Wheel bearing easy peasy, had to cut one out with a torch on my moms 2000 Tahoe with 303k miles and she was a rotted pile of shit. Third brake like, don't care because I'll be taking the topper off. Rust, I didn't see any issues, the inspector said it was very clean and thought it was from out west ...it's from Idaho. 4900 hours though, seems like the truck idled forever unless they drove and average of like 15-19mph. The hours are what worry me and they were asking 17.5k with 96k miles. I know the hours are a bargaining chips against the price
