"But there was a weird slapping sound while on the highway."

Sounds like a fluttering/tapping noise, near the roof/windshield around 60-65MPH+? That thing eluded me for years!

Check out my thread, post #125-135

I don't have any water leaks. But I'll look into those side rubbers.

But for now, if it was the broken mount on the cowl panel allowing it to bounce between the hood & firewall causing any noises, it definitely ain't now.

My issues is I travel east/west. The highway is north/south. The highway is pretty much in the center of a 49sq mile city. I pretty much never get on the hwy.

I made a decision last night, I'm confident that my 2000 pump is what was leaking. So I'm going to swap the 2002 pump onto my 2000 tank & hope for the best. That way I don't need to swap the LF wheelwell liner to match the 02 tank, nor put an additional hole in my 00 liner to be able to mount the two together.

Here is the part number interchange list for the cowl panel.

That's alot of part # revisions in a short time period.

I wonder if there truly is a part difference that I didn't visually notice or just a corporate money wasting shuffle?

Ok, completed project for now. The original Washer Fluid reservoir is reinstalled with the Pump Motor from the 2002. Everything seems to be dry.
Once I put the column back together and rehook-up the battery, so I can test it to verify any leaks.

I'm finally swapping out the clockspring & steering wheel cover to add the factory steering wheel radio controls from a 1999 GMC Jimmy.

Relative easy straight forward job.

Disconnect battery & wait 15min.
Remove steering wheel airbag.
Separate and remove steering column clamshell cover.
Remove dash bezel.
Remove steering wheel.
Remove knee panel.
Unplug & fish out clockspring harness.

My clockspring part was #26081822

Now reverse the order to put it back together with the donor parts but with a potential mod or change depending upon which donor parts you got?

In my case, I have to change both plug ends on the donor clockspring.
Now if I had also gotten the Jimmy airbag, then I wouldn't have needed to change the airbag plug. But because the plug housing is easy enough to open with a pick, I just swapped the housings.

Sierra plug is yellow. Jimmy plug is black/yellow.

By swapping the plugs, I didn't have to buy an airbag to.

Now for the fun part, swapping clockspring pigtails on the harness under the dash.
The pins inside the housing are not even close to the same shape, so you can't swap just the housings. Gotta cut & swap pigtails.

I offset cut the wires so it's not too fat in that area when put back together.

Always give a pull test to verify that it's nice & tight.

Now plug the harness back together.

Before putting the dash bezel back on, I'm going to do some cleaning first.

Got a dead friend inside the cluster.

My cluster part # is 16264095

Took the lens off. Gave a quick wipedown of the cluster & inside the lens. Knocked off the flaking coating that was the Message screen. Reinstalled the lens & cleaned the outside.

While the cluster was out, I noticed this black box dangling there not attached in place. Most likely one of the noises that I occasionally hear?
I unplug it to A: see what it is & B: see how it's supposed to be attached so that I can reattach it securely & potentially eliminate a noise.

Keyless Entry Receiver part # 15732806

Bad news, this box crumbled in my hands.

So the next time that I visit the salvage yard, I'm going to get a replacement. I also fished out the other broken pieces that I could find.

Now to work on the steering wheel. The leather on the donor steering wheel was in bad shape, so I am swapping all of the parts onto my steering wheel.
1st, remove all of the screws to remove everything.
Remove the rear cover.
My original cover # is 16759151
20260312_145238.jpg
Then install the donor cover. Part # 16821317
20260302_113846.jpg
Plus install the switches & harness. Because my steering didn't originally have the switches, the holes weren't pretapped. I little extra oomph & the screws will thread the metal of the steering wheel.
I cleaned the contacts before reinstalling. Left is clean, right is dirty.
20260302_120537.jpg
Reinstall the steering wheel and airbag.
20260302_124857.jpg
Tilt the steering wheel up. Reconnect the battery. From outside the vehicle, reach under the column & turn the key forward. Then start the vehicle. If you didn't screw up the wiring, the airbag didn't deploy. Therefore you didn't eat the airbag by sitting in front of it when testing.

Just did my heater core, and this little guy broke off on me too. I need to go get one myself or just rig something up and velcro it down. But my key fob has been weak even with a new battery so I think changing it is the best route.

Actually just bought the steering wheel and clock spring today, to do this same thing. Are you connecting to factory radio or aftermarket. Are you going to run the wires to an interface module? I hadn't looked for myself but is there a connector that is stowed to plug the audio controls from the clock spring? I'm planning on running four wires already but if there is a stowed connector then I will just use that

I hope/assume that you did the a/c evaporator while you were in there.
