If you have a live data scanner, you can compare stepper motor readings with actual scanner readings. I was getting way high oil pressure readings, like @INW-Iron-Steel had.
From my experience, when they fail they get "sticky"- ie, they move fine one direction, but not the other. When I would shut the truck off the gauge would stay at about the half way mark, and then when I started it, it would push up higher than before. Repeating this would eventually cause the needle to get maxed out and stuck all the way to the right.

That is EXACTLY what mine did on the 2004 Silverado. The Live Data oil pressure readout, voltages, backed up my thoughts.

Foxwell NT710 GM $297 at Amazon. Is Live Data Bi Directional and for GM. Can also be upgraded for other manufacturers for a fee but I am having to wait till Monday to do that very thing for adding Ford and am unsure what that fee is. The $297 is already loaded for GM though. Helped me diagnose my oil pressure gauge problem on my 2004 Silverado K2500 HD. verified was the stepper motor and not the oil sensor. I really like this one for my 3 GM vehicles.

You can also get a Foxwell NT630 Plus that is also Bi Directional and Live Data but is generic and slower and is only $110 at Amazon. It does a nice job though.

Pull them both up at Amazon and have access to 2 cups of coffee and read all about them.
Damn, that looks like a much better deal than the Innova!

I am going to have to look into that NT710 as the Innova 5610 is missing some of the bi directional test I would like to have for a few of my rigs (crank angle reset specifically for my 04).

I think you may have just spent some of my money for me!

So many times you do not realize you need something the scanner cannot do, till you look for it and find out, it is not there. The NT710 is no Snap On unit but it is also not a $4k scanner.

In my case, buying for less than $300 for just GM, was a no brainer because of my 3 GM vehicles. I have a need for Ford help and will contact Foxwell tomorrow about doing that and what it costs. I will respond back here when I do.

I've got the blue backlit gauges in my 04. It looks really nice. I've got a picture of it in the build thread on my truck, and a picture of the stepper motor failing and telling me I had astronomical oil pressure...
So the Headlamp Dimmer Switch and climate control arrived today. I'm really excited for the cluster to show up. Thinking about waiting to install all 3 at the same time, but my fat fingers are itching to go remove the bezel and install the light and climate switches. Haha.

Welp, both went in pretty easy. Nice to see lights and Dimmer works perfect.

I've still got to take the cluster out of my wife's '06 SS and do all the steppers and bulbs. Everything's fine except the oil pressure gauge has decided to go into constant sweep mode, left to right, left to right, over and over. Every once in a while when it goes left it will give you the DING DING DING to alert you to the low oil pressure.

I replaced the sender about 4-5 years ago because it crapped out. I'm gonna kick myself if I do the gauges and find out the new GM sender went bad.

A live data scanner will remove all doubt.

You know it is not gonna give actual oil pressure, right? It is gonna give you voltages and there is a scale for the equivalent psi to that voltage.

Sure, just didn't know if it talked to the PCM -> gauge cluster, or was analog like the older stuff. If it's the sender I know exactly what to expect - a repeated swing of low end to high end on the reading.

If it wasn't cold and pouring rain I'd be out there messing with it now. For another day..

I looked at Amazon for both models of Launch CRP123 and it says they do live data but did not list oil pressure. There was a Launch CRP123I and a Launch CRP123X that shows that the 123 I does not do live data but the 123X does the live data for oil pressure.

I did all the steppers and bulbs in my 2006 cluster. Also did the bulbs in the dual zone/automatic ("digital") A/C panel, and the steering wheel buttons. IIRC the digital A/C panel has two different types of bulbs in it, 12V and 6V

The whole reason for this job is my fuel gauge stepper went bad during a battery cable replacement. Figured since they're known for failure I did the whole thing.

This is the kit I used for my 2006 SS since it has the extra stepper for the transmission temperature: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01J50FOBA

These are the "grain of rice" bulbs I used in the steering wheel buttons: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00L8BR76A

And finally here's the climate control bulb kit; note that you have to pick auto or manual on the controls as the bulbs are different: https://taninautoelectronix.com/product/2003-2006-gmc-chevrolet-truck-diy-climate-control-bulb-kit/ - I wish I could remember the information source I used to determine which bulbs were which. There's two circuit boards in the controls IIRC...sorry; don't have pics of doing that one, but it really wasn't a big deal.

The only real PITA is the replacement bulbs for those small ones in the buttons and A/C controls don't come with the blue covers that give them the correct color; you have to carefully pull them off the old bulbs and transplant to the new. Sometimes they're crispy which makes it tough.

Richard
I tried that and butchered it. I don't have the right tools. I watched YouTube videos and did it. I don't have a tester so when I installed the LEDS half the lights didn't work. In both the gauge and climate control.

Well good news. My cluster from digital dash solution will be here tomorrow. When I install it I'll take photos to post.
Are you gonna send the old one back to them for the lifetime warranty? They will already send you a return label and make sure to open the box from them without tearing it up. You send your old one back in that packing and box. They will send you an email stating the lifetime warranty.

Absolutely I will. My wife receives packages ALL the time. I told her that I was excited about a package coming for me tomorrow. First thing she asks is....how much? WTF?? I have no words.

Did you get a stock cluster, which I think is $250, or did you get a custom one?
